White River flood warnings extended across Central and Southern Indiana as waters recede

CENTRAL INDIANA — Flood warnings remain active along major reaches of the White River following torrential downpours that dropped more than 10 inches of rain across parts of Indiana last week. Although water levels have crest-passed northern reaches and major flooding has dropped to moderate levels, downstream communities continue to brace for rising waters and extended inundation.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis has extended flood warnings for several key locations, including Edwardsport, Spencer, Petersburg, and areas below the Eagle Valley Power Plant. Active warnings also remain in place for communities near Centerton and Newberry.

Crest Projections and Regional Impacts

  • Centerton: The crest along the White River is approaching Morgan County and is expected to reach near 17.7 feet shortly after daybreak Monday. At this stage, moderate flooding affects low-lying local roadways, including Blue Bluff and Paragon Roads, with water encroaching near homes in low-lying areas.
  • Spencer: Water levels in Owen County are forecast to rise through the early part of the week, reaching moderate flood stage and cresting near 20.6 feet by early Wednesday morning before slowly receding toward the weekend.
  • Petersburg: Downstream sections in Pike and Knox counties will see delayed impacts, with minor flooding forecast to begin Tuesday afternoon as water continues its path toward the Wabash River.

Safety Precautions for Motorists

Weather officials caution that downstream river levels can remain elevated for days after rainfall stops. Emergency managers urge drivers to never attempt to bypass road barricades or drive through flooded routes. Six inches of fast-moving water is enough to sweep an adult off their feet, and two feet of water can float most vehicles.

Residents living along riverbanks and flood-prone areas should continue monitoring localized statements from local officials and the National Weather Service.
