BLOOMINGTON — Major upgrades and long-overdue maintenance appear to be on the horizon for Memorial Stadium following significant financial actions taken by the Indiana University Board of Trustees.

During its meeting on Friday, Aug. 14, the board approved $50 million in financing dedicated to immediate renovations at the 66-year-old venue. In addition, trustees voted to submit a $150 million capital project request to the State of Indiana to fund further long-term facility enhancements.
According to Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Jason Dudich, who presented the resolution, the initial $50 million will address “critical needs” and immediate project requirements related to deferred maintenance.
The board’s decisions align with ongoing efforts led by IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Dolson. Over the last three years, Dolson has surveyed the fan base twice to gather feedback on game-day amenities, seating options, and overall fan experience. Recent fan-driven enhancements have already yielded upgraded concessions and expanded premium seating choices.
Head football coach Curt Cignetti has also publicly championed facility improvements, expressing a desire to expand seating capacity and build a new press box on the aging west side.
Key Details on the Facility and Upgrades:
- Current Capacity: Memorial Stadium currently seats just over 56,000 spectators, placing it in the bottom third of the Big Ten Conference for stadium capacity.
- Demand: Driven by recent program success, all eight Indiana home football games are expected to sell out for the 2026 season.
- Next Steps: While immediate funding addresses structural and deferred maintenance, the $150 million state request represents the potential groundwork for larger, multi-year expansion projects.
