BEDFORD – Like the courts that are getting a fresh layer of asphalt, Bedford North Lawrence tennis will be resurfacing its lineup for the new season.
After losing seven seniors, including four that comprised the doubles tandems late last year, the Stars will be much younger in 2026. With only three seniors on the roster, including one was extensive varsity experience, BNL will have a revamped look. That means most of the seven lineup positions will be reshuffled, and that could be a continual experiment until the results dictate the final product.
That does not mean Ian Dillman, starting his third season as the head coach of his alma mater, is adjusting expectations. The Stars doubled their win total last season, finishing 8-12, so the new goal is double digits in match victories.
”We’re looking to build up from last year, continue on with the program,” Dillman said. “I liked what I saw last year, and this year I see better players and skill out here. I want to keep building off of that. We want to get into double-digits in wins.”
The foundation will start with the returning veterans. Senior veteran Jackson Corey was a fixture in singles at the No.1 spot, but Dillman is projecting him to team with junior Asher Thompson (who played No.2 singles) for a robust doubles team to solidify that half of the rotation.
“Jackson will be thrown into a different spot, together with Asher in doubles,” Dillman said. “I had to make a tough decision, moving singles to doubles. So they will lead the pack, with Jackson using his experience.“
From that starting point, BNL will look for players to claim a spot on the courts. Aden Ralston, who played No.3 singles in the sectional, and Laedon Jones have varsity matches in their resume.
“There are a lot of holes to fill,” Dillman said. “Aden has improved so much. He’s no longer a freshman who just pushes the ball back, he has shown his ability on the court. We have become consistent, we have to increase our tennis knowledge.”
Among the newcomers stepping to the forefront, hard-hitting freshman Levi Thompson has been impressive, while Riley Pruett and Cruz Gomez are using their athletic abilities to make strides.
“I’m excited to see them out there,” Dillman said. “We just have to figure out the placement.”
BNL will open the season at Northeast Dubois on Aug. 17.
