INDIANA — Federal consumer safety officials announced a massive recall of approximately 1.5 million OCOOPA-branded rechargeable hand warmers after reports revealed the devices can overheat and catch fire, posing severe burn risks and potential loss of life.
The recall, officially announced on July 30, 2026, comes after OCOOPA Direct received 1,480 reports of the devices overheating. The thermal failures have caused at least 15 fires and 350 burn injuries, as well as the death of an 83-year-old consumer in San Diego, California, in February 2026.

The internal lithium-ion batteries powering the hand warmers are prone to overheating and igniting during both operation and charging. When lithium-ion batteries fail, they can swell, rupture, and create intense, fast-spreading flames. Because hand warmers are held directly or kept in proximity to the body, users face an exceptionally high risk of severe burn injuries.
Recalled Models and Identification
The recall affects seven distinct OCOOPA-branded models sold online between September 2018 and May 2026 for prices ranging from $15 to $60. The devices were distributed through Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Ocoopa.com, and Ocoopa.net.

What Consumers Should Do
Consumers are instructed to immediately stop using all recalled hand warmers.
To receive a full refund—issued either to the original form of payment or as an OCOOPA gift card—owners must take the following steps:
- Write the word “RECALLED” in permanent marker clearly across the hand warmer.
- Take a clear photograph showing the “RECALLED” marking, the model number, and the three-digit batch number.
- Submit the proof photo online via ocoopa.com/pages/product-recalls.
WARNING ON DISPOSAL: Defective lithium-ion batteries pose a fire risk in municipal waste streams. Do not place recalled hand warmers in regular trash bins, curbside recycling containers, or standard retail battery drop-boxes.
