BEDFORD – Bedford North Lawrence, ranked No.19 in the state preseason poll, finished fifth in the Bloomington South Invitational during the season-opening high school girls golf tournament on Monday.
The Stars carded a team score of 350 in the field that featured five teams ranked in the coaches poll.
No.9 Center Grove won the team title with 301, followed by No.8 Castle (306), No.10 Floyd Central (324), No.11 Batesville (337) and New Albany (350). The event was hosted by Stonecrest, with work still ongoing at Bloomington Country Club.
”For our first tournament of the season, it wasn’t a bad round,” BNL coach Carly Stigall said. “Today really shows teams what they need to work on. For us, our short game killed us at times and that’s part of the game that saves scores the most.”
Sammie Nusbaum paced the Stars with a 4-over 75. Her round included one birdie (on the ninth), one double bogey, one triple, and 15 pars. Emma Voris (86) and Kadynn Canada (88) also carded solid scores, while Bella Warren capped the scoring with 101.
“Sammie played well,” Stigall said. “For her, putting saved her. She didn’t let herself get too frazzled and really leaned into her short game when she had mishits. This group showed a lot of potential. We’re gonna work out some kinks and work hard to improve each week.”
Center Grove’s Zoe Land was the medalist with a 1-under 70.
BNL will compete in the Seymour Invitational at Shadowood on Tuesday. The Washington Invitational (originally scheduled for Saturday at Country Oaks) has been cancelled because of course conditions.
