BEDFORD — A Heltonville woman was taken into custody late Saturday night after allegedly operating a vehicle under the influence of methamphetamine outside a local shelter, according to court documents filed by the Bedford Police Department.
Angie G. Hallanger, 52, faces preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) with impairment and OWI with a controlled substance following an incident at Becky’s Place on August 1, 2026.
According to a probable cause affidavit authored by Officer Clay Blackburn, officers were dispatched to Becky’s Place, located at 1108 5th Street, around 11:19 p.m. regarding a report of an unwanted female in the parking lot. Upon arrival, officers located Hallanger sitting in the driver’s seat of a black Chevrolet Malibu with the engine still running.
Staff members told police that Hallanger was “not acting herself,” appeared manic, and was believed to be using illegal drugs after stopping her prescribed medication. Employees also reported that she had made threats toward staff members and another individual over the past week.
When approached by police, Hallanger turned off the ignition and handed her keys to a shelter employee. According to the affidavit, Hallanger exhibited highly erratic behavior, sweating profusely, speaking rapidly, using profanities and slurs, and constantly changing subjects.
During questioning, Hallanger told officers she was supposed to be taking Seroquel and suffered from bipolar disorder and pneumonia. She also mentioned unprescribed Suboxone and made statements about having marijuana at her residence.
While field sobriety testing was cut short due to Hallanger’s inability to follow instructions, she subsequently admitted to Officer Haluda that she had smoked methamphetamine earlier in the evening “out of a bowl.”
Officer Haluda administered a SoToxa oral fluid drug screen, which yielded a positive result for STIM-MAMP/XTC (stimulants, methamphetamine, and ecstasy).
After complaining of difficulty breathing, Hallanger was evaluated on scene by IU Health Ambulance personnel. Upon medical clearance, she was taken into custody.
Staff members at Becky’s Place provided security footage confirming that Hallanger had operated the black Chevrolet Malibu, driving westbound on 5th Street and turning into the shelter’s parking lot at approximately 11:09 p.m. before exiting the driver’s side door.
Hallanger consented to a chemical test and was transported to IU Health, where two blood samples were drawn at 12:41 a.m. by medical staff. The samples have been submitted to the Indiana State Department of Toxicology for formal analysis.
Hallanger was subsequently transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
