SHIPSHEWANA – The Indiana State Police, in coordination with the LaGrange County Coroner’s Office, the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department, and the Shipshewana Marshal’s Office, have concluded an investigation into the death of an infant at a residence in Shipshewana.
On April 6, 2026, Indiana State Police detectives were called to a residence in Shipshewana to investigate the death of an infant. Detectives immediately began a coordinated, multi-agency investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Through the course of the investigation, detectives determined there was enough evidence to charge the infant’s mother. On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, Chantel Cunningham (24) of Shipshewana was charged with the following.
- Murder: Level 1 Felony
- Neglect of a Dependent, Causing Death: Level 1 Felony
Ms. Cunningham was taken into custody and is currently being held at the LaGrange County Jail.
