JASPER — A 34-year-old Jasper woman was arrested Thursday afternoon after authorities responded to reports of young children leaning dangerously out of a third-story apartment window.
Officers with the Jasper Police Department were dispatched around 2:00 p.m. to an apartment complex located on Dewey Street. Upon arrival, officers observed two children, both under the age of 10, hanging out of a third-story window and throwing various objects at pedestrians and passersby on the ground below.
Upon entering the residence, officers discovered the children’s mother, identified as P.J. Perez, 34, asleep inside the apartment while three young children were under her care.
During a check of the premises, responding officers determined that the apartment was in an unsafe and severely unsanitary condition for the children.
Perez was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Dubois County Security Center. She faces three preliminary charges of neglect of a dependent, a Level 6 felony.
Case records indicate that bond for Perez was set at $750 cash.
The Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) was called to the scene to assist officers with the investigation and to ensure the immediate safety and welfare of all three children.
Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent until proven guilty through a fair and due legal process. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
