Beating the heat: Brown, Lawrence, Orange Co organizations get Duke Energy grants for fans, air conditioners

PLAINFIELD – The Duke Energy Foundation is working with two local nonprofits to distribute critical relief for customers in need.

Heat relief

With high temperatures like those in Indiana this week, the shareholder-funded Foundation is collaborating with these organizations to provide relief from the heat:

  • South Central Community Action Program – $2,500 for qualifying Brown County families who need a cooling device for their homes, including fans and air conditioning units.
  • Hoosier Uplands, Lawrence and Orange counties – $2,500 to distribute portable air conditioners

Duke Energy’s view

“Indiana summers can be extremely hot, as we’re experiencing right now,” said Liz Irwin, government and community relations manager for Duke Energy Indiana. “Support for nonprofits like this, which have a mission to help our most vulnerable, can make a difference in avoiding heat-related illnesses and provide our customers with some comfort when temperatures rise.”

More ways to save

Duke Energy offers a number of other tools and resources to help customers take control of their energy use and save money, including:

  • Payment Assistance Finder, a free online tool that directs customers to local assistance resources in their area through a simple ZIP code search.
  • Usage Alerts that send customers a notification of how much electricity they are using and its cost midway through their billing cycle so they can make adjustments before their billing period ends.
  • The Smart Usage Option, a new time-of-use rate for residential customers that helps them save on their bills by shifting typical household chores to times when there is less demand for power.
  • Free Home Energy House Calls, where energy professionals assess a home in person or virtually for efficiency and provide customers with a toolkit of energy-saving devices.

  • Installment payment plans for customers needing flexibility.
