Kokomo man dies after being struck riding electric scooter on Sycamore Street

KOKOMO A 21-year-old Kokomo man has died from his injuries after being struck by a vehicle while riding an electric scooter early Friday morning, according to the Indiana State Police.

The incident occurred on June 26, 2026, at approximately 5:30 a.m. ISP Trooper James Wilkison was on routine patrol when he came upon the immediate aftermath of the crash on Sycamore Street, near 17th Street.

According to the preliminary state police investigation, a 2014 Chrysler Pacifica driven by Tracy Turner, 51, of Kokomo, was traveling eastbound on Sycamore Street when the vehicle struck a pedestrian, identified as Brisjonta Richmond, 21, also of Kokomo. Richmond was riding an electric scooter at the time of the collision.

Investigators noted that visibility may have played a factor in the crash. Further investigation revealed that Richmond was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing. Additionally, state police reported that the electric scooter was not street-legal and lacked proper operational lighting.

First responders performed life-saving measures at the scene before Richmond was airlifted to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite medical efforts, Richmond later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by medical staff. His family has been notified.

The driver of the Chrysler, Tracy Turner, was not injured in the crash.

State police officials state that alcohol and drugs are not currently believed to be contributing factors to the crash, though standard toxicology results remain pending. The investigation is considered active and ongoing.

Trooper Wilkison was assisted at the scene by personnel from the Kokomo Police Department and Ascension EMS.
