INDIANA — Indiana’s labor market showed continued resilience in May, outperforming national averages in both employment rates and workforce engagement, according to the monthly employment report released Tuesday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD).

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate settled at 3.3% for May 2026. This keeps Indiana significantly ahead of the national curve, with the U.S. unemployment rate holding at a notably higher 4.3% for the same period.
Workforce Participation and Scale
The data highlights a highly active state workforce, with Indiana’s labor force participation rate recorded at 63.2%, surpassing the national average of 61.8%. This metric tracks the percentage of Hoosiers aged 16 and older who are either currently employed or actively seeking work.
Indiana’s total labor force rose to 3,489,693 individuals. Conversely, the segment of the population remaining outside the labor force consists primarily of full-time students, retirees, individuals unable to work due to chronic illness or disability, and adults managing primary childcare responsibilities for their families.
Private Sector Sector Gains
Total private sector employment reached 2,843,000 in May, marking a net increase of 3,800 jobs compared to April. The growth was driven primarily by seasonal hiring spikes in outdoor production and service roles.

Openings and Benefit Claims
The state continues to exhibit strong demand for talent. As of May 31, 2026, Indiana recorded 94,059 open job postings across various industries.
On the unemployment insurance front, the state’s safety net remained stable. For the week ending June 6, 2026, DWD tracked 19,068 continued unemployment insurance claims statewide.
