Hammond man arrested in connection with I-80/94 road rage shooting

GARY — A multi-agency investigation into a daylight highway shooting has resulted in the identification and arrest of a Lake County man.

Jaymiere Johnson, 25, of Hammond, Indiana, was taken into custody on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, following a coordinated traffic stop in Gary. Johnson was remanded to the Lake County Jail, with formal criminal charges being forwarded to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office for official review.

The breakthrough in the case came two days after the initial shooting. Gary Police Department officers spotted and initiated a traffic stop on a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee, which had been flagged as the primary suspect vehicle.

Detectives with the Indiana State Police (ISP) Lowell Post Investigations Bureau credited the Gary Police Department and the Gary Police Real Time Crime Center’s surveillance network as instrumental in tracking down the vehicle and identifying Johnson.

State Police officials also extended recognition to ISP Trooper Jace Haddon, who responded to the scene of the high-risk traffic stop while off-duty and provided continuous assistance to detectives throughout the three-day investigation.

The arrest stems from a violent road rage dispute that erupted during the evening rush hour on Monday, June 8, 2026, at approximately 5:45 p.m.

According to preliminary ISP reports, the incident began between two drivers traveling westbound on Interstate 80/94. As the vehicles exited the interstate onto the Burr Street ramp, the driver of the gray Jeep Grand Cherokee opened fire on an orange Jeep Wrangler while stopped at the traffic light at the top of the exit ramp.

The victim, who was the sole occupant of the Wrangler, sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Following the shooting, the wounded driver managed to navigate his vehicle to the nearby Hard Rock Casino off Burr Street to seek emergency medical assistance.

State Police quickly dispelled early online rumors suggesting the shooting took place on casino property, clarifying that the victim merely used the location as a safe place to meet first responders. The victim was transported to a regional hospital and remains in stable condition.

Investigators maintain that the shooting was not a random act of violence.
