BLOOMINGTON – Bedford North Lawrence’s Evan Tillett and Hudson Martin qualified for the IHSAA regional during boys high school golf sectional action at Cascades on Monday.
The Stars came up short in their bid to earn a team spot in the second stage of the state tournament series. BNL finished fourth with a team total of 315. The top three in the sectional, plus the top three scorers who were not members of qualifying teams, advanced to the regional at Country Oaks.
Brownstown stunned the field with its first sectional title in program history, posting 301. Bloomington South, which had won 11 straight sectional championships, was second with 308, while Bloomington North claimed the final spot with 309.
Tillett and Martin earned two of the individual spots. Tillett carded a 2-over 74 to finish tied for fourth overall, while Martin posted 77.
“Evan and Hudson played well and they will get a chance to play for a spot at the state tournament,” BNL coach Trey Turner said. “The focus this week will be on getting them ready for the regional.”
Brody Simmons (81) and Parker Foddrill (83) capped the scoring for BNL.
”We didn’t have our best stuff,” Turner said. “It wasn’t the easiest conditions and the course was extremely firm. We made some big numbers coming down the stretch, but I’m proud of the way that we battled.”
Bloomington South’s Colton Watson was the medalist with a 2-under 70. The Braves won the crown by posting four scores in the 70s, with Eli Downing leading the way with a 73. Owen Valley’s Jake Cunningham was the third individual qualifier with a 73.
Tillett and Martin will play in the regional on Thursday. The top three individuals who are not members of advancing teams (in the field of 15 teams and 15 other individuals from sectionals at Terre Haute, Vincennes, Evansville and Jasper) will qualify for the state finals at Prairie View on June 16-17.
