COLUMBUS — The Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office has released the identity of a 19-year-old man who lost his life in a violent, single-vehicle wreck northwest of Columbus on Tuesday afternoon.
Jeremy “Jay” Ray Jackson II, 19, of Butlerville, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting. An initial assessment determined that Jackson succumbed to massive body trauma sustained during the impact.

Jay enjoyed playing basketball, staying up too late playing video games, and expressing his creativity through painting and drawing. He had a passion for designer athletic shoes and took pride in building an impressive collection. Jay dreamed of one day becoming a tattoo artist, combining his artistic talent with his desire to create something meaningful and lasting. He will be remembered for his creativity, his individuality, and the unique way he saw the world around him. Arrangements are pending with the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon.
The crash, which left three other occupants hospitalized with serious injuries, occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, near the intersection of North County Road 325 West and Lowell Road, just south of the Lowell Bridge over the Driftwood River.
According to Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lt. Dane Duke, emergency dispatchers received multiple reports of a heavily damaged SUV that had veered off the rural roadway.
First responders arrived to find four occupants inside the vehicle. The wreckage required a massive, coordinated rescue effort from local fire, medical, and law enforcement personnel:
Jackson II was located by emergency crews and declared deceased at the scene.
A second occupant became heavily trapped in the compressed frame of the vehicle. Emergency crews utilized specialized extrication tools to cut the individual free. Due to the severity of their injuries, a Lifeline helicopter landed near the scene and airlifted the victim to an Indianapolis-area trauma center.
The remaining two occupants were stabilized at the scene by paramedics and transported via ground ambulances to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment.
The identities and updated medical conditions of the three surviving passengers have not yet been publicly released by authorities.
The intersection near Lowell Bridge remained completely blocked for several hours on Tuesday afternoon as emergency crews cleared debris and documented the scene. The roadway has since been fully reopened to local traffic.
The Bartholomew County Accident Reconstruction Team was deployed to the crash site to map the vehicle’s trajectory and gather physical evidence.
While investigators have confirmed the wreck involved only one vehicle, they have not yet indicated what specific environmental or mechanical factors may have contributed to the SUV leaving the roadway. The Sheriff’s Office noted that its reconstruction team is actively reviewing physical evidence, roadway conditions, and vehicle dynamics to establish a definitive timeline of events leading up to the collision.
Local authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the vehicle traveling near Lowell Road or County Road 325 West on Tuesday afternoon to contact the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office at 812-379-1650.
