Fatal crash shuts down lanes on I-65 near Seymour; Indiana State Police investigating

SEYMOUR— All lanes of Interstate 65 in Jackson County have fully reopened following a severe, fatal multi-vehicle crash on Saturday evening that heavily disrupted holiday weekend traffic.

According to the Indiana State Police (ISP), emergency crews responded to the northbound lanes of I-65 near the 50-mile marker—just north of the Seymour exit—at approximately 6:15 p.m. on May 30.

The severity of the collision prompted an immediate emergency response. Sgt. Stephen Wheeles with the Indiana State Police confirmed that the crash resulted in at least one fatality.

The response required the grounding of “more than one” medical helicopter directly on the interstate to transport critically injured victims to regional trauma centers. Due to the air medical response and the widespread debris field, state troopers were forced to shut down all northbound and southbound lanes for several hours, causing massive backups.

While the interstate was closed, ISP diverted southbound traffic at State Road 11 onto US 50.

By late Saturday night, state police confirmed that the main lanes of I-65 had been cleared and reopened to regular traffic. However, cleanup and investigative efforts faced secondary bottlenecks in the immediate area.

As of 10:30 p.m., Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Trafficwise maps showed that the nearby ramp connecting US 50 to I-65 Southbound remained completely closed. While the crash exacerbated local congestion, INDOT clarified that this specific ramp closure was due to pre-existing, ongoing roadwork in the area.

The identities of those involved and the exact number of vehicles caught in the wreck have not yet been released. State police investigators are continuing to piece together what caused the initial collision.
