FRANKLIN – Bedford North Lawrence finished second in the IHSAA regional during Unified track action on Saturday.
The Stars totaled 108 points in the nine-team field. Columbus North won the team crown with 123 points. The top four teams in the regional advanced to the state finals. BNL will makes its seventh trip to the state meet in 10 seasons.
“I am extremely proud of each and every one of these kids,” BNL coach Mike Branam said. “We struggled a bit in the field events, but the kids really focused and performed on the track. We have been working on skills this season, but also mental attitude, focus, and teamwork. Today that showed in the best way. The kids were really encouraging one another, helping one another, and getting in their zones before competing. We definitely are not one of the biggest teams in the state, but these kids have proven they are one of the best.
“The kids did not want to be finished yet. The expectation since the first practice was to end our season on June 6, and once again, that is what they get to do.
“Today was truly a team effort by a bunch of determined kids. Their growth this season is impressive, and no matter what happens next week, they are champions in my book. There is only one better way to end that season, and that is our final goal.”
BNL will compete in the state meet on June 6 at North Central in Indianapolis.
