BNL’s Voigtschild, Mishler win events as Stars finish second in sectional

BNL’s Paige Voigtschild won two races as the Stars finished second in the IHSAA sectional at Seymour.

SEYMOUR – Bedford North Lawrence’s Paige Voigtschild and Lily Mishler won individual titles in their respective races during the IHSAA girls track sectional at Seymour on Wednesday night.

Voigtschild claimed a pair of championships as the Stars finished second in the team competition. Seymour won the team crown with 136 points, while BNL totaled 112. Mitchell, with two individual champions, finished fifth in the 10-team field with 60 points.

The top three finishers in each event advanced to the regional at Bloomington South on May 26.

After suffering through a postponement on Tuesday and making a second trip to Seymour, the Stars made the wait worth it.

“It was awesome,” BNL coach Jason Webb said. “I’m very proud of them. It was exciting. Second place in the sectional is great.”

Voigtschild glided to victory in the 1600 in 5:23.24, and she backed that up with a win in the 800 in 2:25.66. Mishler claimed her blue ribbon in the 400, crossing the line in 1:02.46. She also qualified in the 100, grabbing third place in 13.38.

BNL’s Lily Mishler won the 400 meter race in the sectional on Wednesday night.

“Not to be cliche, but Paige is a gamer,” Webb said. “She’s going to do the best she can. Lily had a real good night. She was all-in on the 100.”

The Stars capped the competition by winning the 1600 relay as Voigtschild teamed with Mishler, Alaina Fish and Gracie Simmerman to clock 4:23.66.

”We had not beaten Seymour in that relay all year,” Webb said. “Those girls knew it would be close.”

Other regional qualifiers for the Stars included the 3200 relay (Voigtschild, Simmerman, Madison Chandler and Ashlynn York finished second in 11:33.28), Madalyn Mason (third in the discus at 90-8), and York (third in the 3200 in 12:44.61).

Mitchell’s Marissa Blais won the 300 hurdles in 48.98, and she doubled up to advance in the 100 hurdles while finishing second in 16.14. The Bluejackets also had a double victor as Kaylynn Kohlhaas took the shot put with a throw of 34-5.5, and won the discus at 105-8.

The top three in the regional (which will include qualifiers from sectionals at Columbus, Bloomington and Madison) will advance to the state finals at North Central in Indianapolis on June 5.
