SOUTH BEND – The Indiana State Police has been requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting that happened on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at a gas station in the 3300 block of Portage Avenue.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 3:12 p.m., the South Bend Police Department was contacted by the mother of a 25-year-old female requesting a welfare check on her daughter, who was believed to be in the area of Cleveland Road and Portage Avenue. The information provided to the South Bend Police Department also indicated that the female may have been armed.
At approximately 3:29 p.m., officers with the South Bend Police Department and the St. Joseph County Police Department located the female at a gas station in the 3300 block of Portage Avenue. Shortly after encountering the female, at least one officer is believed to have fired their weapon. Early review of surveillance footage shows the female produce a handgun prior to shots being fired by law enforcement. Officers on scene rendered aid to the female until medics arrived. Officers from several police agencies assisted the ambulance in getting to a local hospital by holding intersections. The female was pronounced deceased at the hospital at approximately 4:10 p.m.
This is an ongoing investigation that will include a review of body-worn cameras, in-car camera footage, and any additional surveillance footage. At the conclusion of this investigation, all information will be given to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor for review.
