BEDFORD — The Bedford Altrusa Club continued its focus on community service and outreach during its April 13 meeting at Southland Church of Christ, highlighting ongoing projects, upcoming volunteer opportunities, and recent honors from a regional conference.

Club President Kathleen Row called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. with 17 members and one guest in attendance.
Treasurer Sara Kern presented the financial report, while Norma Hoffman shared minutes from the club’s March meeting. Donna Rainey updated members on continued support efforts for residents at Core Nursing Home, including service projects aimed at improving the quality of life.
Members also reported strong engagement with the Free Little Library in Avoca, which is maintained by Susie Turner and Kelly Myers and has seen significant community use.
Loretta Bailey read thank-you notes received from Marti Arvin and the Salvation Army of Dallas, Texas. She also noted ongoing outreach to local nursing homes, where she recently delivered 20 magazines to each of five facilities.

The club remained active in public events, with several members participating in the WBIW Women’s Expo in March. Volunteers hosted a Flamingo Bingo game and sold leftover nuts from a previous fundraiser.
Looking ahead, members are preparing for Memorial Day by organizing efforts to place flags on veterans’ graves, according to Fannie Lee. Volunteers are also being sought for the upcoming Senior Fair scheduled for May 20 at Sherwood Oaks Church.
In additional business, members voted to sponsor a Brain Games Team for the Lawrence County Museum, further supporting educational initiatives in the community.
Kern and Mary Barnes recently represented the club at the Altrusa District Six Conference, where the Bedford chapter earned multiple honors and brought back $800 in awards. The club received two first-place awards and one second-place award for projects supporting LARC, Daughters of Ruth International, and lap robe donations for Core Nursing Home residents.
