COLUMBUS — A 13-year-old boy was flown to an Indianapolis hospital Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle in a residential area of Columbus.
The Columbus Police Department (CPD) reports that officers were dispatched to the intersection of 5th Street and Lindsey Street at approximately 4:45 p.m. following reports of a personal injury accident involving a pedestrian.
According to preliminary reports, a Chevrolet Silverado was traveling southbound on Lindsey Street when it struck the teenager. The driver of the truck has been identified as a 72-year-old male.
The 13-year-old sustained a possible head injury as a result of the impact. Due to the severity of the injury, a medical helicopter was called to the scene. The teen was airlifted to a specialized trauma center in Indianapolis for further treatment.
Police have not reported any injuries to the driver of the Silverado.
The CPD Accident Investigation Unit remained on the scene for several hours to reconstruct the event. At this time, it is unclear if speed or weather played a factor in the collision, and the investigation remains ongoing.
This incident occurs as central Indiana sees a seasonal uptick in pedestrian activity. Local safety advocates remind motorists to remain vigilant in residential zones, especially during the “after-school” window between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
