MITCHELL — South Lawrence Utilities has issued an immediate boil water order for residents and businesses along a significant stretch of State Road 60 West. The order was issued following a water main break that has potentially compromised system pressure and water quality.
The boil order is in effect for all customers located on State Road 60 West, from the intersection of Sonny Dorsett Road to the junction of State Road 60 West and US Highway 50 West, and all surrounding areas and side streets are connected to this section of the line.
Until further notice, affected customers are advised to bring all water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before using it for the following:
- Drinking or making ice.
- Brushing teeth.
- Washing fruits and vegetables.
- Preparing baby formula or food.
It is generally safe to bathe or shower, but extra caution is needed with infants and toddlers to ensure they do not swallow any tap water.
Utility crews are currently working to repair the break. Once the line is restored, the system must be flushed, and water samples must pass laboratory testing to ensure the water meets state and federal safety standards.
The boil order will remain in effect until the utility officially rescinds it. After the order is lifted, residents are encouraged to flush their home plumbing by running cold water faucets for several minutes.
