Indianapolis man dies following rescue attempt at Eagle Creek Reservoir

INDIANAPOLIS – A heroic effort to retrieve a drifting boat ended in tragedy this week at Eagle Creek Reservoir. Authorities confirmed Friday afternoon that 41-year-old Frederick Holmes of Indianapolis has died from injuries sustained during a water rescue on Thursday.

Indiana Conservation Officers released the update at 4:39 p.m. on April 24, 2026, marking a somber conclusion to an incident that began as an act of kindness.

The emergency unfolded around noon on Thursday near Dandy Trail. According to investigators, a boater had tied his vessel to a dock and walked back to his vehicle. While he was away, the boat became untied and began to drift into open water.

Witnesses say Holmes, who was a bystander at the scene, offered to swim out and retrieve the drifting vessel. However, during the attempt, he began to struggle in the water and submerged without resurfacing.

First responders were dispatched to the reservoir at approximately 12:00 p.m. following reports of a possible drowning. The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) Dive Team arrived on the scene and initiated a search operation.

Divers located and recovered Holmes within approximately 30 minutes. He was immediately transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries the following day.

Ongoing Investigation

Indiana Conservation Officers are leading the investigation into the drowning. No further details regarding the conditions of the reservoir or specific causes of the struggle have been released at this time.

Authorities often remind the public that even skilled swimmers can be overcome by cold water temperatures, hidden currents, or physical exhaustion when attempting to swim in open water.
