BEDFORD – Washington fought off two late Bedford North Lawrence rallies to stop the Stars 8-5 during high school baseball action on Saturday.
The Hatchets (8-7) added key insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings while ending BNL’s three-game winning streak.
After BNL (5-5) took a 1-0 lead in the first, Washington answered with three runs in the third, with Alton Ostby and Ben Merold collecting RBI hits. The Hatchets extended their lead to 5-1 in the sixth as Cooper Wright cracked a run-scoring hit and Eli Keeker chased home a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Stars finally broke through against Wright, who went 6 1/3 innings on the mound, with two runs in the sixth, as Grayson Gillespie ripped a two-out, two-run single.
After Washington made it 8-3 with three runs in the seventh on Harrison Merold’s bases-loaded double, BNL battled back in the bottom of the frame. Cutler Chastain and Jaden Gilbert drove in runs, but Keeker came on in relief to record the final two outs.
Jackson Jones had two hits for BNL.
The Stars will host Shakamak on Monday.
