Trooper Jason Riley awarded Bronze Star at Indianapolis Awards Ceremony

SELLERSBURG – The Indiana State Police hosted its annual Awards and Recognition Ceremony this morning in Indianapolis, honoring troopers across the state for exceptional service, dedication, and achievements that often go unnoticed by the public. The event recognized individuals who demonstrated exemplary commitment to the department and to the citizens of Indiana.

Trooper Jason Riley

This year, Sellersburg Trooper Jason Riley was honored with the Bronze Star for exemplary service in rescuing a driver from a burning car. Trooper Riley’s award reads:

The Superintendent and the Indiana State Police Board take pleasure in commending Trooper Jason Riley.

for performance in duty recognized as having been performed at a level clearly beyond expectations.
In the evening hours of April 20th, 2025, Trooper Jason Riley was on routine patrol when he was made aware of a vehicle crash on Interstate 65. Initial reports indicated that the vehicle was on fire, and the driver was trapped inside.

Trooper Riley made the scene a short time later and was met with utter chaos. Some first responders were on scene attempting to extinguish the blazing vehicle, while the driver of the vehicle was still trapped inside. Time was of the essence, requiring Riley to act without hesitation or regard for his own well-being.

Trooper Riley promptly retrieved his fire extinguisher after being informed that the on-scene responders had expended their own. Riley quickly approached the burning vehicle and attempted to extinguish the flames. Camera footage of the incident revealed Riley’s audible reaction and disregard for the extreme heat and smoke that were billowing from the vehicle.

Trooper Riley’s attempts to extinguish the flames were unsuccessful. Acting quickly, and at great risk and peril to his own life, Riley retrieved his expandable baton from his duty belt. Riley began to forcefully strike the rear windshield of the vehicle, eventually breaking the glass to gain access to the driver.

Trooper Riley and a Clarksville Police Officer, Ryan Roderer, then reached into the burning vehicle and recovered the elderly driver, who was weak but still alive. Riley and Roderer carried the driver to safety away from the vehicle, ultimately saving his life.

Trooper Riley’s actions and dedication to duty are in keeping with the finest traditions of law enforcement and reflect great credit upon himself and the Indiana State Police.
