GEORGETOWN — The Mitchell Junior High School Band continued its streak of excellence this weekend, delivering a powerhouse performance at the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) District Assessment.
On Saturday, April 11, the ensemble traveled to Highland Hills Middle School to showcase their musical precision before a panel of expert adjudicators. The group’s hard work paid off as they walked away with a Gold rating from all three judges, the highest possible marks given at the district level.
This victory marks the second consecutive year that the Mitchell Junior High Band has secured a Gold rating at the ISSMA assessment. In the world of middle school music, achieving back-to-back Gold ratings is a testament to the program’s consistency and discipline.
Under the direction of Paul Pfeifer, the band has cultivated a reputation for technical skill and emotional expression. The ensemble, composed of 39 dedicated students, has spent months preparing its repertoire, focusing on complex rhythms, intonation, and dynamic control.
To receive a unanimous Gold from three different judges is no small feat. It shows that the students aren’t just playing the notes; they are mastering the artistry of the music.
The ISSMA District Assessment is a rigorous evaluation designed to provide feedback to school music programs across Indiana. Unlike a traditional competition where bands play against one another, the assessment measures each ensemble against a high standard of musical excellence.
The judging criteria include:
Tone Quality: The resonance and clarity of the instruments.
Intonation: The accuracy of pitch across the various sections.
Technique: The mechanical skill used in playing the music.
Interpretation: The band’s ability to follow the style and phrasing intended by the composer.
The Mitchell community has rallied behind the young musicians, celebrating the win as a point of local pride. With 39 students participating, the band represents a significant portion of the junior high’s talent, proving that “small but mighty” ensembles can achieve elite results.
The Gold rating qualifies the group for further recognition and serves as a springboard for the band’s upcoming spring concert schedule. For Director Paul Pfeifer and his students, the weekend was a clear indicator that the future of the Mitchell music program is brighter than ever.
