Jasper jumps on BNL for 7-2 victory

JASPER – Jasper jumped on Bedford North Lawrence in the early innings while posting a 7-2 victory during high school softball action on Thursday.

The Wildcats (3-3) scored three in the first and three more in the third. Jasper took advantage of three BNL errors for its first-inning rally, then added on running-game pressure via two walks, two stolen bases and a run-scoring single by Lexi Elkins in the third.

“We dug ourselves a hole early and couldn’t climb out of it,” BNL coach Brad Gilbert said. “We have to do a better job of putting the ball in play. We will get back to work and they will improve.”

The Stars (0-6) broke through with two runs in the sixth. Jaden Schofield singled, Sara Williams doubled, and Karsyn Coleman plated both runs with a single to center. But BNL managed only four hits against Jasper hurler Bryn Smith, who struck out 10.

Smith and B.B. Barrix had two hits each for the Wildcats. BNL was guilty of five errors and Jasper totaled seven stolen bases.

BNL is scheduled to host Clay City (10 a.m.) and Avon (6 p.m.) during the BNL Invitational on Saturday.
