MUNCIE – The Muncie Police Department has requested the Indiana State Police to conduct an independent investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday evening.
At approximately 5:00 p.m., Muncie Police officers were dispatched to the 300 block of South Ivy Wood Drive to conduct a welfare check. Officers arrived on scene within minutes. Upon their arrival, the male subject pointed a handgun at responding officers before retreating inside the residence and barricading himself.
Officers remained on scene and made multiple attempts to de-escalate the situation, engaging in negotiations to have the subject surrender peacefully.
At approximately 8:50 p.m., officers attempted to deploy a chemical agent into the back of the residence, at which time shots were fired. The male subject was transported to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
Upon completion of the investigation, all findings will be submitted to the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
The Indiana State Police was assisted on scene by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, the Delaware County Coroner’s Office, and the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office.
