LAWRENCE COUNTY — A Newcastle woman was taken into custody Tuesday after Indiana State Police say she was found with methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, and provided a false identity to officers.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Trooper Logan McDowell, officers encountered Tammi Young around 8:45 p.m., March 22, on the side of State Road 54. Young claimed her vehicle had broken down at nearby storage units and that her phone was dead. She initially gave a false name when asked for identification.

During a pat-down and investigation, officers located a black bag that Young initially denied owning. The bag contained a powdery substance later tested and confirmed as methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, including a pipe commonly used for smoking methamphetamine. Officers also found a realistic-looking firearm, which was determined to be fake.
Young admitted to lying about her identity, explaining that she was attempting to avoid detection due to outstanding warrants in multiple Indiana counties. She was arrested without incident and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
The investigation resulted in preliminary charges of Level 6 felony possession of methamphetamine, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia, and misdemeanor false identity statement. Authorities processed all evidence at the Indiana State Police Bloomington post, including approximately 2.9 grams of methamphetamine.
Those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
