OOLITIC — The Oolitic Town Council is asking residents to be more mindful of what they flush down toilets, warning that improper items are causing costly problems for the town’s wastewater system.
According to town officials, non-biodegradable materials being flushed into the sewer system are creating significant issues at the Oolitic Waste Water Treatment Plant. Items such as wipes, even those labeled “flushable”, along with other debris, can clog equipment, damage mechanical components, and lead to sewer backups.
Town leaders said the impact goes beyond maintenance headaches. When equipment fails or blockages occur, repairs can be expensive and may require specialized equipment and additional labor. Those costs ultimately contribute to higher utility rates for residents.
Over the past weekend, officials reported that wipes caused a sewer backup that required repairs and additional staff time to resolve. The incident serves as a reminder of how quickly improper disposal can disrupt the system.
“The truth is, the cost to operate and solve the problems that are caused by things being flushed that shouldn’t be are a huge reason many utilities have to raise rates,” the town noted in its public message.
The town is urging residents to avoid flushing anything other than toilet paper, emphasizing that doing so will help prevent future breakdowns, reduce repair costs, and keep the wastewater system running efficiently.
Limiting what goes into the sewer system is one of the simplest ways residents can help control costs and protect critical infrastructure.
