Vernon Edward Sutton, 86, of Mitchell, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born March 8, 1940, in Martin County, he was the son of Marvin and Marie (Brown) Sutton. He married Javonna Tolbert on March 21, 1986 and she survives.
Vernon was a 1958 graduate of Huron High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked for both the Army and Navy at Crane NSWC. Vernon had close ties to the area and was a member of the Huron Volunteer Fire Department, oversaw the Huron Cemetery, and worked with the Bryantsville Hunger Relief Project. He loved to piddle around – whether fishing, woodworking, or just enjoying the outdoors. Vernon was a Sunday school teacher and Deacon for the Fairview Church of Christ.
Surviving are his wife, Javonna Sutton of Mitchell; children, Matthew Sutton of Greenfield, Anthony (Diana) Edwards of Oolitic, Greg (Audrey) Edwards of Mitchell, Brad (Amber) Edwards of Bloomington, and Jennifer (William) Jones of Mitchell; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and brother, Roger (Shirley) Sutton of North Judson.
His parents; son, John Sutton; and brother, Robert Sutton, preceded him in death.
Graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 26, at Huron Cemetery with Brother Kris Beasley officiating. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center.
