LAWRENCE COUNTY — With the 2026 Primary Election less than two months away, Lawrence County Clerk Amy Voorhies joined Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales in reminding residents that the window to register to vote is quickly closing.

The legal deadline for Hoosiers to register or update their existing voter information for the upcoming primary is Monday, April 6, 2026.
Voting is the most direct way to have your voice heard in local and state government, said Voorhies. The goal in Lawrence County is to ensure every eligible citizen is registered and ready to head to the polls this May.
Important Dates to Remember
- Voter Registration Deadline: Monday, April 6, 2026 (Online by midnight; in-person by close of business).
- Early Voting Begins: Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
- Primary Election Day: Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
How to Register
Hoosiers have three primary methods to ensure they are on the rolls before the April 6 cutoff:
- Online: Visit IndianaVoters.com. This portal allows you to register for the first time, update your address, or confirm your current registration status using a valid Indiana Driver’s License or State ID.
- In-Person: Visit the Lawrence County Clerk’s Office located in the Courthouse at 916 15th Street, Room 31, Bedford. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- By Mail: Registration forms can be downloaded online and mailed to the Clerk’s office, provided they are received by the April 6 deadline.
Who is Eligible?
To vote in the May primary, you must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Indiana. You must also be at least 18 years old on or before the General Election on Nov. 3, 2026. This means 17-year-olds who will turn 18 by November are eligible to register and vote in the May primary.
Secretary Morales, who has been traveling the state to promote voter participation, emphasized the security and importance of the process. “We are working hard to ensure Indiana’s elections are safe, simple, and accessible,” Morales stated. “I encourage all eligible Hoosiers to take five minutes today to check their status.”
On the Ballot
Voters in Lawrence County will be casting ballots for several key positions this year, including:
- Federal: All nine U.S. House seats.
- State: All 100 Indiana House seats and 25 of the 50 Indiana Senate seats.
- Local: Various county-level offices and precinct committeemen.
Because Indiana holds an “open” primary, voters must request either a Republican or Democratic ballot at the polling site to vote in those specific party contests.
For more information or to request an absentee ballot, residents can contact the Lawrence County Voter Registration office at 812-275-7543.
