July 24, 1946 – March 11, 2026
Max Mallie Peters, 79, of Springville, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by the love and presence of his family and the gratitude of a community he served faithfully for so many years.
Born July 24, 1946, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Morris and Jewell (Hunsucker) Peters. He married the love of his life, Fran (Berry) Peters on June 6, 1970. Though their 55-year marriage in this world ended on November 5, 2025 his love and commitment to her endured.
Max was a steadfast husband, devoted father, proud pawpaw, beloved son, cherished uncle, loyal friend, dedicated Fire Chief, inspiring 4-H volunteer, a Vietnam veteran, and most important, a faithful Christian. He lived a life defined by service, strength, and quiet kindness.
As a young man, he answered the call to serve his country and was proud to be an Army veteran. He was deeply honored to be one of the many men and women who served before, beside, and after him. After returning home, Max continued his commitment to protecting others by serving his community through the fire service. He joined the Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department in Springville in 1974. He stepped into the role of Fire Chief from 2002 through 2019 and Assistant Fire Chief from 2020 through 2026. He was a courageous leader, mentor to younger firefighters, and a reassuring presence during moments when others needed support the most. To those who served alongside him, he was more than a Chief — he was family.
A passionate supporter of the Lawrence County 4-H program, Max served alongside his wife as dedicated leaders for more than 30 years. Even after stepping back from club leadership, he continued involvement by sharing his love of animals through the petting zoo at the annual Lawrence County 4-H Fair for many years, bringing joy and learning to countless children and families. Many others in the community carry fond memories of that same petting zoo making the rounds at local schools, daycares, nursing homes, and churches.
Guided by his Christian faith, Max lived with kindness, compassion, and a servant’s heart. His faith shaped the way he treated others—with generosity and a quiet strength that comforted those around him. His greatest pride was always his family. He was a loving, dedicated husband and father, a pawpaw whose often long-winded stories and laughter created lasting memories, and a son and uncle who stayed deeply connected to those he loved. His family will remember his strength, his humor, and the way he made people feel safe.
Max also had a gift for friendship and never knew a stranger. He had the kind of presence that made people feel welcome and valued. Whether sharing stories, lending a helping hand, or simply chatting with someone who needed company.
Max left an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His life was one of love, courage, generosity, faith, and unwavering dedication—to his country, his community, his friends, and his family. The legacy he leaves behind will live on in the countless lives he touched, and the family who loved him deeply.
Survivors include his three daughters, Jan Breedlove and husband, Tim, of Springville, Rebecca McAllister and husband, Tom, of Bedford, and Jessica Voorhies and husband, Michael, of Springville; eight grandchildren, Amanda (Kyle) Alcorn, Tosh Breedlove, Allison, Austin, and Adam Selbee, Eli and Abby Voorhies, and Gage Cobb; four great-grandchildren, Berkleigh and Knox Alcorn, and Kendyl and Kelsi Sykes; brothers, Jesse (Ann) Peters, and Don and Joe Peters; and countless nieces, nephews, and beyond.
Max will be profoundly missed but never forgotten. His strength, integrity, faith, and heart will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. Well done good and faithful servant.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 24th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Day & Carter Mortuary with the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association honoring Max at 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 25th at 1:00 p.m., with visitation from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.
