NHTSA announces recall of certain Kumho Tires due to tread separation risk

INDIANA – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new safety recall involving certain passenger vehicle tires manufactured by Kumho Tire Co., Inc..

According to federal safety officials, the recall affects Kumho Solus TA11 tires in size 225/60R16. The tires may experience tread separation, which could increase the risk of a crash if it occurs while the vehicle is in motion.

The recall, identified by NHTSA Recall ID Number 26T009, was issued after the tires were found to potentially fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 139, which governs safety requirements for new pneumatic radial tires used on light vehicles.

Tread separation occurs when the outer tread layer of a tire detaches from the rest of the tire structure. This condition can reduce vehicle stability and handling, particularly at highway speeds.

As part of the remedy, Kumho will either refund the purchase price of the affected tires or replace them at no cost to owners. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning May 3, 2026.

Drivers who believe they may have purchased the affected tires are encouraged to check the brand and model using the NHTSA recall lookup tool or contact the manufacturer directly for instructions on obtaining the free remedy.

Vehicle and tire safety officials recommend that motorists regularly inspect their tires for signs of unusual wear, vibration, or visible damage and address any concerns promptly to reduce the risk of tire-related crashes.
