Brazil man arrested on rape charge

LAPORTE COUNTY – Indiana State Police initiated a criminal investigation after receiving information concerning allegations of sexual assault against a female.

The investigation revealed that Andrew Hays, 28, of Brazil, Indiana, had allegedly forced himself on a female for sexual gratification.  This allegation took place in LaPorte County.

After reviewing the investigation, the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office asked for a warrant to be issued for Hays’ arrest.  A warrant was issued by LaPorte Superior Court February 27, 2026, and Hays was arrested on charges of rape, a Level 3 felony and intimidation, a Level 6, on the active warrant, by Troopers Andrew Mattern and Athan Lamson of the Putnamville State Police Post without incident.  He is currently being held in the Clay County Jail awaiting extradition to LaPorte County on a $25,000 cash bond.
