Boil Water Advisory issued for All South Lawrence Utilities customers following main break

BEDFORD— A system-wide Boil Water Advisory is in effect immediately and until further notice for all South Lawrence Utilities customers.

The emergency order follows a significant water main break caused by a third-party contractor near Southridge Drive.

Utility officials confirmed that a contractor struck a primary water main, causing a sudden loss of pressure and potential for contaminants to enter the distribution system. A repair crew is currently en route to the site to begin emergency excavations and restoration.

Until the advisory is lifted, customers are advised to bring all water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before using it for any of the following:

  • Drinking or making ice.
  • Brushing teeth.
  • Washing fruits and vegetables.
  • Preparing baby formula or food.

When a water main breaks or loses pressure, it creates a vacuum that can draw in groundwater or bacteria. While repairs are underway, the utility must perform a series of tests to ensure the water meets safety standards. Once the main is fixed, the system will be flushed, and water samples will be sent to a lab for testing.

The boil order will remain in place until two consecutive sets of water samples come back clear. Residents should expect the advisory to last at least 24 to 48 hours following the completion of the repairs.

Dishwashers are generally safe to use if the water reaches a high enough temperature (at least 150°F), but hand-washing dishes should be followed by a rinse in a bleach solution (1 tablespoon of unscented bleach per gallon of warm water).
