Obituary: Joseph S. Johnson

August 7, 1942 – February 11, 2026

Joseph S. Johnson, 83, of Heltonville, passed away at 7:10 a.m., on February 11, 2026, at Bloomington Hospice House.

Born August 7, 1942, in Bedford, he was the son of Floyd S. Johnson and Lena May Cummings. He married Linda Lou Turpin on June 12, 1960, and she preceded him in death on December 9, 1997. He retired in 2004 as a carpenter for Dunlap Construction; he was in the Construction Workers Local Union #1654 and #301 and was a member of Fairview Community Church.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin Johnson and special friend Lisa Kemper of Illinois, and Troy (Tracy) Johnson of Bedford; one daughter, Kim (Scott) Gillespie; eight grandchildren, Robert Gillespie, Danny (Megan) Gillespie, Jimmy (Lauren) Gillespie, Lindi (Justin) Kelley, Laini Johnson, Kristen Stewart, Hollie Johnson, Stephanie Johnson; nine great-grandchildren, Chesney and fiancé Sven Lutchka, Grayson, Eliza, Damien, Ivy, Shelby, Peyton, Jaxson, Dawson, Braxton, Clayton, Remington, and Everett; two brothers, Charles (Pat) Johnson of Oolitic, and Steve Johnson of Heltonville; one sister, Rowena Todd of Heltonville; sister-in-law Phyllis Johnson of Bedford; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda; his parents; granddaughter Sara Marie Johnson; great-grandson Robert Kiven Gillespie; brothers Robert, Donald, William, Marvin, and Walter Johnson; two sisters, LaDonna Shroeder and Bernice Stultz.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 16, 2026, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary, with Brother Kenny Fisher and Brother Lindy Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow in Mundell Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 15, and from 10:00 a.m. to the hour of service on Monday at Day & Carter Mortuary.
