Koch: Resolution to honor Bob Knight passes committee

STATEHOUSE — A resolution sponsored by State Sen. Eric Koch (R-Bedford) and authored by State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville) to honor IU basketball coach Bob Knight passed out of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Transportation unanimously today.

State Sen. Eric Koch (R-Bedford) and State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville) present House Concurrent Resolution 4 to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Transportation on Feb. 3.

House Concurrent Resolution 4 would ask the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename the stretch of State Road 45 between College Avenue and Fee Lane in Bloomington to the “Bob Knight Memorial Way.”

Bob Knight served as head coach for the Indiana University men’s basketball team from 1971 to 2000. Coach Knight guided the Hoosiers to three national championships, including the 1975-76 undefeated season, which is the last perfect season in men’s college basketball.

“Coach Knight was known for his competitive spirit and love for the game of basketball,” Koch said. “He embodied the culture of Indiana basketball and helped shape its identity that we know today. Renaming this road would honor and celebrate Coach Knight’s lasting legacy in Indiana as one of the most influential coaches in college basketball history.”

This resolution now moves to the Senate for further consideration.

Koch is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Utilities, ranking member of the Senate committees on Commerce and Technology and Judiciary, and a member of the Senate Committee on Corrections and Criminal Law. He represents Senate District 44, which includes Brown, Jackson, Lawrence and Orange counties, and a portion of Monroe County.
