Greene County extends Red Status Travel Warning through Wednesday morning

BLOOMFIELD — The Greene County Board of Commissioners has officially extended the countywide Red Status Travel Warning as dangerous winter conditions continue to impact the region.

Originally set to expire sooner, the extension now keeps the warning in effect from 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 26, through 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

Under Indiana law, a “Warning” is the highest level of local travel advisory. It indicates that travel is restricted to emergency management workers only. Individuals are directed to:

  • Refrain from all travel unless it is a life-threatening emergency.
  • Comply with necessary emergency measures.
  • Cooperate with public officials and disaster services.
  • Obey and comply with the lawful directions of properly identified officers.

The extension comes as Greene County faces a combination of heavy snow accumulation and a life-threatening Arctic air mass. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for the area, with wind chills expected to reach as low as -27°F tonight and Tuesday morning.

Authorities emphasize that blowing and drifting snow are making many secondary roads impassable, and the extreme temperatures make any vehicle failure a potentially fatal situation.

Government and Local Impact

  • County Offices: Greene County government offices will remain closed to the public through the duration of the warning, with the exception of essential emergency services.
  • Schools: Most local districts, including Eastern Greene and Linton-Stockton, have moved to remote learning or canceled classes for Tuesday.
  • Services: Many local services, including trash collection in Linton, have been suspended or rescheduled to later in the week.

“The safety of our residents and our first responders is the top priority,” the Commissioners stated. “Staying off the roads allows our highway crews to work effectively and prevents emergency personnel from being diverted to non-emergency slide-offs.”

Residents are encouraged to monitor the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) travel map for any further updates or changes to the advisory level.
