Lawrence County escalates to Orange Travel Status as winter conditions worsen

BEDFORD — As of Sunday morning, January 25, 2026, the Lawrence County Commissioners have officially upgraded the county to an Orange Travel Status. This escalation comes as a severe winter storm continues to blanket the region, making roads increasingly dangerous and threatening public safety.

An Orange Travel Status, also known as a Watch, is the second-highest level of travel alert in Indiana. It indicates that conditions have deteriorated significantly beyond the previous Yellow advisory. Under this status, the following guidelines are in effect:

  • Essential Travel Only: Residents are strongly urged to stay off the roads. Travel should be restricted to essential trips only, such as commuting to and from work or responding to medical emergencies.
  • Emergency Plans Activated: Local businesses, schools, and government agencies are advised to implement their emergency action plans. This may include closures or shifted operating hours.
  • Safety Hazards: The “Watch” level signifies that hazardous conditions—including heavy snow accumulation, ice, and reduced visibility—are actively threatening public safety.

Current Conditions and Forecast

The move to Orange status follows Governor Mike Braun’s statewide disaster emergency declaration issued Saturday evening. Forecasters expect the storm to continue through Monday morning, with total snow accumulations in Lawrence County projected to reach between 9 and 13 inches.

Extreme cold is also a major concern. Wind chill values are expected to drop as low as -25°F tonight, creating a high risk for frostbite and making any travel even more precarious for those who might become stranded.

Officials stress that staying home is the best way to ensure personal safety and allow road crews to work effectively. If you must travel for an essential reason:

  1. Check the Status: Monitor the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) travel map for real-time updates.
  2. Pack an Emergency Kit: Ensure your vehicle has blankets, a flashlight, water, and a charged phone.
  3. Drive Slowly: Expect slick surfaces and drastically increased braking distances.

The travel status will remain at Orange until the Commissioners determine that the immediate threat to public safety has subsided.
