Travel Alert: Lawrence County Placed Under Yellow Advisory Amid Winter Storm

LAWRENCE COUNTY — Local officials have officially placed Lawrence County under a Yellow Travel Advisory as a major winter storm begins to impact the region. This is the lowest of Indiana’s three local travel alert levels, but it signals that hazardous conditions are now affecting routine activities.

Under a yellow status, routine travel may be restricted due to hazards such as heavy snow, ice, or flooding. While the roads remain open, the Lawrence County Commissioners and emergency management officials strongly advise residents to:

  • Use extreme caution if you must be on the roads.
  • Avoid affected areas where snow or ice accumulation is most severe.
  • Slow down and allow significant extra time for any necessary commutes.

The advisory comes as Lawrence County faces harsh winter conditions. As of tonight, the area is experiencing light to moderate snow with a temperature of 13°F. Due to 10 mph winds from the east, wind chill values have plummeted to a “feels like” temperature of 0°F.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the area, with heavy snow expected to continue through Monday morning. Total snow accumulations for south-central Indiana are projected to reach between 9 and 13 inches.

The hazardous conditions are expected to peak overnight and through Sunday, with a 98% chance of snow tonight and a low of 7°F. Officials warn that travel could become “very difficult to impossible” by the Monday morning commute.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) travel map for real-time updates and to ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency kits including blankets, flashlights, and water.
