Canned Tuna sold in nine states linked to potential botulism risk

INDIANA— The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an urgent recall notice on Monday regarding specific canned tuna products sold across nine states including Indiana. The recall, initiated by Tri-Union Seafoods, concerns a packaging defect that could lead to life-threatening contamination.

The recall stems from a defect in the “easy open” pull tabs on certain cans. According to the FDA, this flaw can compromise the airtight seal over time, leading to leaks or the growth of Clostridium botulinum. This bacteria causes botulism, a severe and potentially fatal form of food poisoning.

While these specific cans were originally quarantined in February 2025, a third-party distributor accidentally shipped the affected units to retailers recently, prompting this new public alert.

The recall impacts two specific Genova Yellowfin Tuna products. Consumers are urged to check their pantries for the following details:

1. Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil (4-Pack)

  • Size: 5.0 oz (Four-pack)
  • UPC: 4800073265
  • Can Codes: S84N D2L and S84N D3L
  • Best-By Dates: 1/21/2028 and 1/24/2028

2. Genova Yellowfin Tuna in EVOO with Sea Salt (Single Can)

  • Size: 5.0 oz
  • UPC: 4800013275
  • Can Code: S88N D1M
  • Best-By Date: 1/17/2028

The products were distributed through Meijer, Giant Foods, Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions in the following states – Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin, Maryland and Virginia and California.

The FDA is urging consumers not to eat, serve, or even open these products. Botulism toxins are odorless and tasteless; a product may appear safe even if it is contaminated.

Return the cans to the place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of them immediately.
