BEDFORD — A Bedford man was arrested early Saturday morning after a traffic stop revealed he was driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.

Dawson Hicks, 27, was pulled over around 1:42 a.m. Jan. 10 near the area of State Road 37 and Fifth Street for speeding, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by Officer Taylor Daugherty of the Bedford Police Department.
Officer Daugherty reported detecting the odor of alcohol from the vehicle and observed signs of impairment, including slurred speech and bloodshot, glossy eyes. Hicks agreed to perform a preliminary breath test, which showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.190.
Following protocol, Hicks was transported to the Bedford Police Department for a certified chemical breath test, which recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.193, more than twice Indiana’s legal limit.
Hicks faces charges of operating while intoxicated (OWI), OWI endangerment, and OWI per se greater than 0.15. He was taken into custody at the scene, and no arrest warrant was required. The vehicle was picked up from the scene.
Police said Hicks was later transported to IU Health for medical clearance before being booked into the Lawrence County Jail.
Officer Taylor Daugherty handled the traffic stop and investigation.
Those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
