BPD traffic stop leads to arrest of Indianapolis man on meth and narcotics charges

BEDFORD — An Indianapolis man was arrested early Jan. 11 after a traffic stop in Bedford led to the discovery of suspected drugs and paraphernalia, police said.

Cody Hamilton, 35, was taken into custody following a stop around 1:10 a.m. in the area of the 700 block of Seventh Street near Lincoln Avenue, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by Officer Sarah Haluda of the Bedford Police Department.

Haluda said she stopped a maroon sedan after observing issues with the vehicle’s registration. During the stop, officers noted inconsistent statements from the occupants and signs of nervous behavior. Officer Bell arrived to assist, and a police K-9 conducted a free-air sniff of the vehicle, which resulted in a positive alert for the presence of illegal drugs, police said.

A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered suspected methamphetamine, suspected narcotics, and drug paraphernalia located in areas accessible to the front-seat passenger, according to the affidavit. Hamilton was detained and later transported to the Lawrence County Jail.

Police said Hamilton showed signs of impairment during the arrest and booking process. Field tests later indicated the presence of methamphetamine and fentanyl, according to the report.

Hamilton faces charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia, and possession of a narcotic. He was taken into custody at the scene, and no arrest warrant was required, police said.

Those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
