Safeguarding Hoosier Babies: Indiana celebrates 25 years of the Safe Haven Law

INDIANA – Indiana is marking a significant milestone this year, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the state’s Safe Haven Law. This vital legislation provides a critical and legal lifeline for parents in crisis, offering them a secure option to surrender an infant without fear of arrest or prosecution.

The law, which has been instrumental in protecting countless Hoosier lives, ensures that vulnerable newborns are placed into safe care immediately.

State Representatives Dale DeVon (R-Granger) and Joanna King (R-Middlebury) recently spoke out to highlight the profound impact of the Safe Haven Law and underscore the importance of protecting Hoosier life.

“For 25 years, the Safe Haven Law has stood as a beacon of hope and compassion in Indiana,” said Rep. DeVon. “It is a testament to our commitment to both the well-being of newborns and the parents facing unimaginable circumstances. We are proud to have a legal pathway that prioritizes safety above all else.”

Rep. King echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the law’s role as a non-judgmental option for struggling families.

“The core mission of the Safe Haven Law is simple: to save lives,” Rep. King stated. “It gives parents a secure, legal, and confidential means to ensure their infant is cared for when they feel they have no other choice. Every Hoosier life is valuable, and this law is a crucial layer in our safety net.”

What the Safe Haven Law Means

The Indiana Safe Haven Law permits a parent to anonymously hand over a baby 30 days old or younger to any emergency medical services provider, hospital, police station, or fire station. The law guarantees that the parent will not face criminal charges for abandonment, provided the infant has not been abused or neglected.

This 25-year celebration is a moment to recognize the dedication of the lawmakers, first responders, and advocates who have upheld and supported this life-saving statute, ensuring that every Hoosier baby has a chance at a safe life.
