Overnight standoff ends peacefully after emergency detention response in Monroe County

BLOOMINGTON A nearly eight-hour standoff concluded peacefully early Tuesday morning after the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office successfully detained an individual under a court-ordered emergency detention.

The incident began on Monday, December 8, 2025, when deputies responded to the 2900 block of North Smith Pike at 7:19 p.m. to execute a court-mandated emergency detention order.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered a subject who was non-compliant and refused to communicate with law enforcement personnel. As the situation progressed without resolution, the decision was made to escalate the response.

At 10:46 p.m., with communication stalled, the roadway was shut down in preparation for the arrival of specialized personnel. The Bloomington Police Department Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) arrived on the scene at 11:07 PM and immediately initiated their specialized communication procedures and tactics.

Through sustained effort and strategic communication by the CIRT, the situation was de-escalated, and the subject ultimately surrendered peacefully at 2:36 a.m. on Tuesday.

The individual was then safely transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital to fulfill the conditions of the emergency detention order.

The roadways were promptly reopened, and the area was cleared of all police activity shortly after 3:15 AM, concluding the extended incident.
