ORLEANS — As the holiday season approaches, Orleans Town Marshal James C. Lindsey is reminding residents to prioritize safety at home and while traveling. The Orleans Police Department is encouraging the community to review a few simple but critical tips regarding home security and decoration safety to ensure a safe and peaceful season.

For questions or assistance, residents are encouraged to call the Orleans Police Department at 812-865-2222.
Home Security: When You’re Home and Away
Marshal Lindsey emphasized steps residents can take to protect their property from theft, especially with new purchases often visible during the holidays.
- Secure Your Home: Always lock doors and windows, even if stepping out for a short period.
- Make it Look Occupied: Utilize automatic timers for lights, radios, or TVs to give the impression that someone is home, deterring potential burglars.
- Conceal Gifts: Do not leave large or valuable gifts visible through windows or doorways. To avoid advertising new purchases, tear down gift boxes before placing them in the trash or recycling.
- Plan for Trips: If leaving town, ask a trusted neighbor or friend to watch the house, collect mail and newspapers, and park a car in the driveway.
- Be Wary of Strangers: Do not open the door for unexpected visitors. Exercise caution when dealing with strangers who solicit door-to-door, and do not hesitate to ask for identification if necessary.
Holiday Decoration and Fire Safety
The department also provided crucial advice on safely decorating homes to prevent common holiday hazards, particularly fires.
- Check Lights: Inspect all lights for damage, including cracked sockets, damaged wiring, or loose connections. Only use lights that carry the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) label and never connect more than three strands on a single extension cord.
- Position the Christmas Tree: Keep natural Christmas trees away from heat sources like fireplaces or vents, and ensure the tree remains watered to prevent it from drying out and becoming a fire hazard.
- Avoid Fire Hazards: Never place wrapping paper in a fireplace. Always extinguish candles before leaving a room or going to sleep.
- Test Alarms: Confirm that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order and that their batteries have been recently updated.
Marshal Lindsey stressed that vigilance and preparation are key to enjoying the holidays without incident.
