Traffic stop leads to felony OWI charges in Lawrence County

SPRINGVILLE — A routine patrol on November 15, 2025, quickly escalated into a traffic stop in Lawrence County, resulting in the arrest of a Springville man on multiple alcohol-related and reckless driving charges.

Indiana State Police Trooper Logan McDowell apprehended Kevin Ray Kidd, 36, of Springville, after observing the suspect driving erratically and at a high rate of speed near the intersection of 7th Street and Bedford Body and Paint.

Trooper McDowell, along with Deputy Porter, witnessed a 1993 Toyota 4-Runner, driven by Kidd, pull out of Norton Avenue and onto 7th Street. The vehicle immediately accelerated “at a high rate of speed,” traveling into the opposite lane of traffic and squealing its tires before narrowly passing the officers’ patrol vehicle.

After initiating a traffic stop, officers approached the vehicle and quickly noticed several signs of impairment from the driver, later identified as Kevin Kidd.

When Kidd exited the vehicle, he displayed very unsteady balance. He admitted to Trooper McDowell that he had consumed four Jack and Cokes.

Trooper McDowell conducted standard field sobriety tests on Kidd at the scene. Kidd demonstrated significant impairment on all tests.

A preliminary breath test resulted in a staggering blood alcohol content of .226, nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08 percent in Indiana.

Kidd was placed under arrest and transported to IU Health Bedford for a chemical test (blood draw), which he had initially agreed to under Indiana’s Implied Consent law.

However, upon arrival at the hospital, Kidd became “very aggravated” and refused to sign consent papers or comply with the blood draw, becoming “argumentative and disrespectful” to the medical staff. He emphatically refused, stating he would not provide his “DNA to anyone here at the hospital,” even after being warned of the legal consequences of refusal.

Due to Kidd’s aggressive demeanor and adamant refusal, Trooper McDowell determined it was unsafe to restrain him to perform the blood draw physically. Kidd was then transported directly to the Lawrence County Jail for housing, where he remained argumentative with staff during the booking process.

Kidd now faces multiple charges, including operating a vehicle while intoxicated, OWI endangerment, reckless driving, and OWI refusal.
