INDIANA – With Halloween fast approaching, children are eager to dress up and head out for trick-or-treating. While getting candy is the goal, the Indiana State Police Bloomington and Jasper Posts are reminding families that health and safety should be the top priority to ensure everyone gets home safely.

The ISP is providing a list of essential safety tips for families, trick-or-treaters, and drivers to help make the evening enjoyable and secure.
Tips for Trick-or-Treaters and Parents
The Indiana State Police emphasizes the need for visibility and the importance of supervision:
- Know Local Times: Check local community announcements for official trick-or-treating dates and hours.
- Be Visible: Ensure children carry a flashlight or glow stick and that costumes have reflective material so drivers can see them.
- Safety in Numbers: Always trick-or-treat with an adult or use the buddy system when approaching a house.
- Stay Off the Street: Walk on the sidewalks and look both directions before crossing any roadway.
- Light Signals: Only approach homes where the front porch light is on.
- Never Enter a Home: Instruct children never to enter a stranger’s home.
- Getting Lost: If a trick-or-treater gets separated, they should stay where they are and ask a trusted adult for help.
- Inspect Candy: An adult must inspect all candy before it is eaten.
Advice for Drivers
For those not actively trick-or-treating, the ISP urges extreme caution while driving on Halloween night.
- Slow Down: Please slow down and drive with extra caution, especially in residential areas, as children may be excited and unpredictable.
The Indiana State Police hopes these safety tips will help families and friends enjoy a fun and secure Halloween night.
