GREENE/LAWRENCE CO. — Emergency responders were dispatched on Thursday, October 23rd, to a substantial incident involving a fuel tanker rollover on State Road 54, near the Greene and Lawrence County line. The accident presented a serious risk due to a significant fuel leak and potential for fire.

Upon arrival, Eastern Greene Fire Territory found both occupants still entrapped in the semi. Officials noted that bystanders had taken proactive action before their arrival, using fire extinguishers on the semi.


Rescue efforts successfully extricated both individuals. One occupant was airlifted to a trauma center, while the other was transported by ground to a local hospital. Authorities confirmed that both individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
State Road 54 was closed for several hours to allow for cleanup operations and environmental mitigation.
A wide array of local and state agencies responded to and helped mitigate the complex incident, including: the Monroe Fire Protection District, Taylor Township Fire Department, Greene County Sheriff’s Department, Greene County Ambulance Service, Ken’s Westside Service and Towing, Air Evac Lifeteam 39 – Brazil, IN, Hoosier Spill Response, Indiana State Police Bloomington District, IDEM, Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC, INDOT, and Greene County EMA.
