Water meter maintenance underway in Bedford outlying areas

BEDFORD— Bedford City Utilities and Master Meter employees have launched a maintenance project to complete water meter register updates in several outlying areas of the city, effective October 16, 2025.

The project involves installing new transmitters at meter pits to update registers that were not reached during the initial, broader update conducted this past summer using fixed antennas. The updates are necessary for the automated meter reading system and will not affect customer water reads or consumption.

Areas Targeted for Update

The project is focused on the following areas that still require the meter register update:

  • Williams Road
  • Saddle Barn Addition
  • Heltonville Road
  • Fellowship Drive
  • Brook Knoll
  • Washington Avenue
  • River Bluff Road
  • Broadview Addition

Residents in the affected areas should be aware of the following steps:

  1. Blue Flag: Bedford City Utilities employees will first locate and place a blue flag next to the customer’s meter pit.
  2. Transmitter Installation: Master Meter employees will then place a transmitter inside the pit to begin the register update.
  3. Pink Flag: A pink flag will be placed next to the meter pit to indicate that the meter register is actively updating.
  4. Completion: The transmitter will be picked up, and both flags will be removed the following day.

Residents are asked not to remove either the blue or pink flags. Employees will pick them up once the update is complete.

The entire process is expected to continue until the end of November. Residents with questions regarding the maintenance should contact the City of Bedford Utilities office at 812-275-1626 during business hours: 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Friday (closed for lunch from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.).
